Frank Frazetta's technique
The working process of Frank Frazetta (USA, Brooklyn, 9 February 1928 - Fort Myers, 10 May 2010) American illustrator, painter, sculptor and comic book author specialising in fantasy and science fiction art can be traced back to the traditional painting technique, that of the great masters of the past, to be clear. I would like to make it clear right away that Frank Frazetta used predominantly oils or tempera in his works, but he is still an outstanding example in acrylic painting, due to his great ability to blur volumes with a very fast but very effective technique, called 'economy technique'. Widely used by famous artists such as Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi, it consisted in largely preserving the colour of the underlying preparation by blending brushstrokes of light and dark tones to shape volumes with great simplicity and great effect.
