Painting Still-Life. Volumes and three-dimensionality.

Artwork: Andrea Mancini 'Fruit Of The Loom' 2020. Acrylic on cardboard, 35x50 cm

In this tutorial, the aim is to render the three-dimensionality and volume of objects through modelling and the effect of shading. Shading can also be rendered by glazing. The 'glazing' technique is the oldest and most classic of painting techniques. Undisputed masters of this technique - widespread especially in the Renaissance - were the Venetians (Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Paolo Caliari known as Veronese). The glazing technique consists of applying several layers of transparent layers of very diluted colour in order to overlap one another to achieve effects of transparency and luminosity otherwise unattainable with the body method. Or by veiling more textural underlying colours to saturate them and achieve the highest possible brilliance. The deep, vivid red of the apple in this still life would have been impossible to achieve simply by using tube colour.

Prerequisites for successful glazing are that the colour is highly transparent and that the underlying surface is completely dry.

The property of modelling volumes of elements in the foreground, placing the dark areas of the element on the lighter background and vice versa, in order to achieve a strong contrast effect that emphasises the sense of three-dimensional volume. Fundamental in 'tonal' painting, that type of realistic painting that does not use line-art contour lines.
